Computing

The National Curriculum states that:
'A high-quality computing education equips pupils to use computational thinking and creativity to understand and change the world. Computing has deep links with mathematics, science, and design and technology, and provides insights into both natural and artificial systems. The core of computing is computer science, in which pupils are taught the principles of information and computation, how digital systems work, and how to put this knowledge to use through programming. Building on this knowledge and understanding, pupils are equipped to use information technology to create programs, systems and a range of content. Computing also ensures that pupils become digitally literate – able to use, and express themselves and develop their ideas through, information and communication technology – at a level suitable for the future workplace and as active participants in a digital world.'
Intent
At Oliverson's, we embrace a digital mindset! All pupils will be delivered a high quality computing education that equips them with the ability to use computational thinking and creativity to understand and change the world. Our goal is to inspire a passion for computing and deliver the skills to fully participate in the future workplace and as active participants in a digital world. Whether they aspire to be software engineers, video gamers or IT consultants, we aim to instil in them our core values.
The children will become digitally literate as they will be able to express themselves and develop their ideas through the use of information technology whilst also having full awareness of how to be safe online in a responsible, confident and creative way.
To enable our children at Oliverson's to be technologically ready, they will be able to apply the fundamental principles and concepts of computer science, including abstraction, logic, algorithms, and data representation. Most of all, we want our children to look forward to and remember their computing lessons and build the confidence to embrace any opportunity they are given in the future!
Implementation
Our Computing curriculum focuses on a progression of skills in: digital literacy, computer science, information technology and online safety to ensure that children become competent in safely using, as well as understanding, technology. These strands are revisited repeatedly through a range of themes to ensure the learning is embedded and skills are successfully developed. Our intention is that Computing also supports children’s creativity and cross-curricular learning to engage children and enrich their experiences in school.

Online Safety

Using the internet is becoming increasingly inevitable in our childrens' lives, whether this is through researching, computing or using educational apps. At Oliverson's, we are committed to ensuring that all of our young people have the knowledge and skills they require to access the internet safely and respectfully. Children are taught about online safety in a number of ways including through PSHE, computing and specific days such as Internet Safety Day.
